Senate Bill 1269 proposes to expand the scope of practice for dental hygienists in Arizona to include the administration of botulinum toxin type A (Botox) and dermal fillers to the oral maxillofacial complex for both therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. The bill outlines that dental hygienists can administer these substances under direct supervision of a licensed dentist after completing required continuing education, and under general supervision if they have at least six months of experience and have completed a minimum of 75 injections under direct supervision within a two-year period.

The bill also mandates that the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners (BODEX) establish continuing education requirements for dentists and dental hygienists who administer Botox or dermal fillers by July 1, 2025. Additionally, it specifies that only high-quality injectable products from reputable vendors may be used. The bill removes the previous requirement for dental hygienists to be issued a neuromodulator or dermal certificate by BODEX to administer these substances. The proposed changes are set to become effective on the general effective date.
