The proposed bill amends Arizona Revised Statutes to require all public and private schools that serve grades six through twelve and sponsor athletic teams to provide automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on campus and at athletic events starting August 1, 2024. Schools must ensure that these AEDs are easily accessible, properly maintained, and accompanied by appropriate signage. Additionally, coaches are mandated to complete a state-approved training course in CPR, first aid, and AED use. Schools are also required to develop a written cardiac emergency response plan in consultation with local emergency medical services, which must be distributed to relevant staff and reviewed annually.
Furthermore, the bill appropriates funds from the state general fund for the implementation of these requirements, specifically targeting schools with a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. The funds can be used for purchasing and maintaining AEDs, CPR training kits, and providing necessary training for coaches. The Department of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Health Services, will establish rules and guidelines to ensure compliance with these new mandates.
