The proposed bill amends the current law by renaming the "Peace Officer Training Equipment Fund" to the "Peace Officer Training Equipment and Nonlethal Weapons Fund." It expands the use of the fund to include not only peace officer equipment but also nonlethal weapons. Additionally, the bill establishes the "Peace Officer Nonlethal Device Fund," where $2 from a $9 surcharge collected by courts or court-authorized diversion programs will be deposited. The remaining $2 of the surcharge will continue to go to the Peace Officer Training Equipment and Nonlethal Weapons Fund. The bill also requires the Peace Officer Training Equipment and Nonlethal Weapons Fund Advisory Commission to submit recommendations to different committees than currently specified.

The bill makes technical and conforming changes and specifies that the state treasurer will manage the new fund, with monies being exempt from lapsing and subject to legislative appropriations. There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund from this amendment, and the bill will become effective on the general effective date.
