HB2113 is a bill that seeks to expand the scope of practice for medical assistants in Arizona. The bill would allow medical assistants to communicate documented medical advice, test results, and orders from a doctor of medicine (MD), physician assistant (PA), or nurse practitioner (NP) without the need for direct supervision. Additionally, it would permit medical assistants to obtain, process, and communicate medication or procedure prior authorizations as documented and ordered by an MD, PA, or NP.
The current law requires medical assistants to record a doctor's findings in patient charts and transcribe materials in patient charts and records under direct supervision. The new bill language would remove the requirement for direct supervision for the newly added tasks, while maintaining the existing provisions for other tasks. The bill also makes technical changes and would become effective on the general effective date. There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
