The bill SB1020 amends Section 36-694 of the Arizona Revised Statutes to expand the Department of Health Services' newborn screening program to include Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This addition to the state's newborn screening panel is required to be implemented by October 1, 2026, or within two years from the date Duchenne muscular dystrophy is added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) adopted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, whichever comes first.
The bill also mandates that the director of the Department of Health Services must notify the director of the Arizona Legislative Council in writing within ten days after Duchenne muscular dystrophy is added to the RUSP. The bill makes technical and conforming changes to the current law and updates the fiscal impact statement.
