He made history as the first Latino to win a major election in Flagstaff, serving 24 years on the Coconino County Board of Supervisors and later as president of the Arizona Board of Regents. Tio was recognized for his advocacy in tribal sovereignty and self-determination, earning numerous awards, including the César Chávez Diversity Award in 2018.
