The proposed bill aims to limit the number of credits a student can earn through a course credit recovery program to a maximum of ten (10) credits during grades nine through twelve, starting with the entering ninth-grade class of the 2025-2026 school year. This limitation is intended to ensure that students engage in a balanced educational experience while still providing opportunities for credit recovery.
However, the bill includes several exemptions for specific groups of students who may require additional support. These exemptions apply to students with individualized education programs, those in foster care, homeless students, and others facing unique challenges such as long-term medical or mental health placements, pregnancy, or enrollment in virtual charter schools. The bill also defines "long-term placement" as an absence of thirty (30) or more days due to prescribed care, ensuring that students in such situations are not penalized by the credit limit.
