The bill amends Arkansas law to establish a protocol for the notification and verification of the veteran status of individuals incarcerated in correctional facilities. It mandates that within fourteen days of a veteran's initial incarceration, the facility administrator or a designated officer must verify the individual's veteran status using data from the Veterans Reentry Search Service. If the individual is confirmed as a veteran and remains in custody for six months or more, written notice of their incarceration must be sent to the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs within forty-five days. Additionally, upon release from custody, a similar notification regarding the veteran's release must also be sent.
Furthermore, the bill requires correctional facilities to provide reasonable access to the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist incarcerated veterans in applying for benefits and treatment. The results of the veteran status verification must be made available upon request to relevant legal authorities, including prosecuting attorneys and public defenders. This legislation aims to ensure that veterans receive the necessary support and resources during and after their incarceration.
