17 WHEREAS, on April 8, 2024, Shorter College announced the unexpected
18 passing of Dr. O. Jerome Green; and
19
20 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green was born in Pell City, Alabama, in 1954;
21 and
22
23 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green received his Bachelor of Arts in English
24 language and literature from Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama, his Master
25 of Arts in journalism at the Ohio State University, and his Juris Doctor at
26 the William H. Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little
27 Rock; and
28
29 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green practiced law in Little Rock before
30 joining Miles College as an associate professor of communications and
31 director of government relations in 2005; and
32
33 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green became the forty-fifth (45th) president of
34 Shorter College, a private, faith-based, historically Black two (2) year
35 college in North Little Rock, in 2012; and

1 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green attended Jackson Theological Seminary in
2 North Little Rock and was a pastor of Connor Chapel AME Churches; and
3
4 WHEREAS, Shorter College school officials noted that under Dr. O.
5 Jerome Green's leadership:
6 (1) Shorter College's enrollment and graduation numbers broke
7 records;
8 (2) Several new academic programs were established at Shorter
9 College;
10 (3) Shorter College established its STEM Center for Academic
11 Excellence;
12 (5) Intercollegiate sports returned to Shorter College; and
13 (6) Shorter College received full re-accreditation by the
14 Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools; and
15
16 WHEREAS, in 2015, Dr. O. Jerome Green was named among Arkansas Life
17 magazine's list of Arkansans of the YEAR for innovation in education; and
18
19 WHEREAS, in February 2024, the HBCU Campaign Fund named Dr. O. Jerome
20 Green one (1) of the Ten (10) Most Dominant HBCU Leaders Award and Class of
21 2024; and
22
23 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green was a former member of the Arkansas Ethics
24 Commission and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission; and
25
26 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green was married to Linda Haynie Green, M.D,
27 and father of three (3) children; and
28
29 WHEREAS, Dr. O. Jerome Green was an important figure in faith and
30 scholarship for the central Arkansas community,
31
32 NOW THEREFORE,
33 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
34 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

36 THAT the Senate express sincere condolences to the family of Dr. O.

1 Jerome Green and commend his outstanding contributions to education in the
2 State of Arkansas.

4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that upon adoption, a copy of this resolution shall be
5 provided to the family of Dr. O. Jerome Green by the Secretary of the Senate.
