17 WHEREAS, Nucor Corporation is the largest steel and steel products
18 producer in the United States and the global leader in steelmaking
19 sustainability; and
20
21 WHEREAS, Nucor is the largest recycler of any type of material in North
22 America; and
23
24 WHEREAS, Nucor recycles approximately twenty million (20,000,000) tons
25 of ferrous scrap metal annually to produce new steel that is one hundred
26 percent (100%) recyclable; and
27
28 WHEREAS, by recycling scrap to make new steel, Nucor's greenhouse gas
29 intensity is less than one-fourth (1/4) of the global steelmaking average and
30 one-fifth (1/5) of the intensity of a traditional blast furnace producer; and
31
32 WHEREAS, Nucor has been an important part of Arkansas's economy since
33 1987 with the construction of its first steel mill in the state; and
34
35 WHEREAS, Nucor has steadily grown and invested in Arkansas, currently
36 operating five (5) facilities in the state:

1 (1) Nucor-Yamato;
2 (2) Nucor Steel Arkansas;
3 (3) Nucor Coatings Corporation;
4 (4) Nucor Skyline Armorel in Mississippi County; and
5 (5) Centria in Grant County; and

7 WHEREAS, Nucor employs more than thirty-two thousand (32,000)
8 employees, known as teammates, working safely at over three hundred (300)
9 operating facilities in North America, with approximately two thousand seven
10 hundred seventy-two (2,772) teammates throughout Arkansas; and
11
12 WHEREAS, in thirty-seven (37) years of operations in Arkansas, Nucor
13 has had a practice of never laying off a single teammate at its steel mills
14 and Nucor teammates all share in the success of the company; and
15
16 WHEREAS, the median pay for Nucor's production teammates over the last
17 three (3) years has averaged more than one hundred thousand dollars
18 ($100,000) per year; and
19
20 WHEREAS, to reinforce its culture, the majority of Nucor's teammates
21 below the officer level are treated as if they are owners of the company,
22 historically receiving ten percent (10%) of Nucor's earnings in a profit-
23 sharing plan in addition to their salary; and
24
25 WHEREAS, Nucor has invested more than one billion dollars
26 ($1,000,000,000) in its Arkansas steel mills in the last five (5) years to
27 modernize and upgrade the capabilities of the facilities; and
28
29 WHEREAS, the western hemisphere's largest steel beams are produced at
30 Nucor-Yamato Steel and Arkansas-made steel can be found in iconic American
31 structures such as One World Trade Center, the home of the Dallas Cowboys,
32 AT&T Stadium, and the world-renowned Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium;

35 WHEREAS, Nucor is committed to education in Arkansas, offering every
36 Nucor teammate and their dependents a four thousand dollar ($4,000) per-year

1 scholarship to college or vocational school, which nationwide has amounted to
2 more than one hundred fifteen million dollars ($115,000,000) awarded to
3 nearly twenty-five thousand (25,000) children since the program's inception
4 in 1974 with nearly twelve million dollars ($12,000,000) awarded in Arkansas,

6 NOW THEREFORE,
7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
8 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

10 THAT the Senate recognize and celebrate Nucor Day at the State Capitol
11 Building on March 7, 2024.
12
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon its adoption, a copy of this resolution
14 shall be transmitted to Leon Topalian, CEO of Nucor Corporation by the
15 Secretary of the Senate.
