8 TO PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF APRIL AS SCHOOL LIBRARY

14 LIBRARY MONTH IN ARKANSAS.

16 WHEREAS, the American Library Association announced the first National
17 Library Week in 1958 and the first national school library month in 1985; and
18
19 WHEREAS, the first systematically organized library was founded in the
20 7th century B.C. by Assyrian ruler Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, in contemporary
21 Iraq and it contained approximately thirty thousand (30,000) cuneiform
22 tablets sorted by subject; and
23
24 WHEREAS, libraries are great repositories of knowledge and the goal of
25 libraries is to collect knowledge and distribute it for its use in everyday
26 life; and
27
28 WHEREAS, libraries are full of stories in a variety of formats from
29 picture books to large print, audiobooks to e-books, and more; and
30
31 WHEREAS, school libraries and librarians provide another space for
32 children to learn and can help students navigate the internet, offer a quiet
33 area for students to study, and encourage students to read; and
34
35 WHEREAS, as learning becomes virtual and students can access learning
36 media anywhere they have an internet connection, school librarians show the

1 students how to safely access and use school resources from home or another
2 space that has an internet connection; and

4 WHEREAS, while students are typically the ones utilizing the resources
5 the school library has to offer, well-trained librarians are expert
6 researchers and can provide teachers with research tools and educational
7 resources; and
8
9 WHEREAS, librarians that work with teachers provide resources to
10 complement lessons in the classroom with displays and other resources in the
11 library; and
12
13 WHEREAS, the school library can be a hub of communal activity for the
14 school; and
15
16 WHEREAS, despite the convenience of the internet, students still like
17 to physically visit a library and spend time among books and other readers;
18 and
19
20 WHEREAS, this year’s National Library Week will be celebrated with the
21 theme "There's More to the Story",
22
23 NOW THEREFORE,
24 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
25 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

27 THAT the Senate proclaim the month of April as School Library Month in
28 Arkansas.
