8 TO CELEBRATE STONE COUNTY AND RECOGNIZE ITS 150TH
9 ANNIVERSARY.

13 TO CELEBRATE STONE COUNTY AND RECOGNIZE
14 ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY.

16 WHEREAS, Stone County was created as Arkansas's 74th county on April
17 21, 1873; and
18
19 WHEREAS, Stone County is located in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas and
20 the county is named for the rugged and rocky terrain of the Ozarks which is
21 on display through the architecture of the native stone exteriors of the
22 Stone County Courthouse and many buildings on the Square in the county seat
23 of Mountain View; and
24
25 WHEREAS, Stone County is home to a part of the Ozark National Forest
26 that includes the Sylamore Shooting range and Blanchard Springs Caverns which
27 hosts tours of the Dripstone Trail, the Discovery Trail, and the Wild Cave
28 Tour, and Blanchard Springs Park which includes the Sylamore creek, Mirror
29 Lake and the cave waterfalls; and
30
31 WHEREAS, Stone County is a destination for world record trout fishing
32 in the White River, kayaking and small mouth bass fishing in the crystal
33 clear waters of the Sylamore Creek, and world class mountain biking on the
34 epic Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail; and
35
36 WHEREAS, Stone County is known as “The Folk Music Capitol of the World”

1 due to nightly musicians who perform on the Square, the annual Arkansas Folk
2 Festival that happens every April since 1963, and the Ozark Folk Center which
3 preserves and interprets Ozark cultural heritage including traditional
4 mountain folk music and crafts, and supports the only public school based,
5 traditional instrument music program in the state, The Music Roots Program;
6 and
7
8 WHEREAS, the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Stone County is
9 being spearheaded by the Stone County Historical Society, the Stone County
10 Leader newspaper, and a committee of community members; and
11
12 WHEREAS, the slogan for the 150th anniversary of Stone County is “Rock
13 Solid at 150 – Foundation for Our Future” and the slogan represents the
14 committee's goal of celebrating the rich heritage of Stone County and making
15 an impact for years to come by helping fund youth-oriented services of Stone
16 County Community Center; and
17
18 WHEREAS, it is important not only to celebrate the history of Stone
19 County, but to plan for the future of Stone County,
20
21 NOW THEREFORE,
22 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
23 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

25 THAT the Senate recognize and celebrate the 150th anniversary of Stone
26 County.
27
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption, a copy of this resolution shall be
29 provided to County Judge Stacey Avey by the Secretary of the Senate.
