8 TO RECOGNIZE THE VAN BUREN HIGH SCHOOL POINTERS
9 WRESTLING TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2023 CLASS 5A STATE

18 WHEREAS, the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team won the 2023
19 Class 5A State Wrestling Championship on February 25, 2023, at the University
20 of Arkansas at Little Rock in Little Rock, Arkansas; and
21
22 WHEREAS, the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team won with one
23 hundred sixty-four (164) points to outpace the second place team by twenty-
24 eight and five one tenths (28.5) points; and
25
26 WHEREAS, with this championship, the Van Buren High School Pointers
27 Wrestling team won its second consecutive Class 5A State Wrestling
28 Championship; and
29
30 WHEREAS, Don O’Kelly won the individual state championship at the one
31 hundred six (106) pound weight class, Dakota Fenwick won the individual state
32 championship at the one hundred thirteen (113) pound weight class, Alex Reed
33 won the individual state championship at the one hundred twenty-six (126)
34 pound weight class, Shiloh Summers won the individual state championship at
35 the one hundred thirty-two (132) pound weight class, and Grant King won an
36 individual state championship at the one hundred ninety (190) pound weight

3 WHEREAS, overall, the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team had
4 ten (10) wrestlers place in individual events at the state championships; and
5
6 WHEREAS, the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team placed first
7 in the following wrestling tournaments: the Van Buren Dual Tournament; the
8 Gravette Tournament; and the Conway Tournament; and
9
10 WHEREAS, the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team’s hard work
11 and dedication were integral in repeating as Class 5A state champions; and
12
13 WHEREAS, the the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling Team is
14 coached by John Petree; and
15
16 WHEREAS, Coach Petree stated of his team “When all of our kids come out
17 here and perform, it’s a testament to how hard they work year round”,
18
19 NOW THEREFORE,
20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
21 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

23 THAT the Senate commend the Van Buren High School Pointers Wrestling
24 Team for its 2023 Class 5A State Wrestling Championship.

26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption of this resolution, a copy shall be
27 transmitted to Head Coach John Petree by the Secretary of the Senate.
