14 AMERICORPS WEEK IN ARKANSAS.

16 WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and
17 throughout our history citizens have stepped up to meet our challenges by
18 volunteering in their communities; and
19
20 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for nearly two hundred
21 thousand (200,000) Americans each year to serve their country through an
22 intensive commitment to service at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and
23 community and faith-based groups across the country; and
24
25 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps enriches the lives of its members, building habits
26 that create engaged citizens who are active participants in civic matters
27 affecting their communities long after their service terms are completed; and
28
29 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members encourage collaboration and partnerships,
30 leveraging millions of volunteers in service and acquiring the support of
31 business partners to increase the effectiveness of their initiatives; and
32
33 WHEREAS, in Arkansas, more than two thousand five hundred (2,500)
34 AmeriCorps members of various ages and backgrounds helped to meet local needs
35 at more than three hundred (300) locations in the state by tutoring or
36 mentoring children and youth, restoring the environment, increasing food

1 security, and responding to disasters; and

3 WHEREAS, in exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members develop
4 valuable work skills, earn money for continuing education, and strengthen the
5 lives of their families, their communities, and the state as a whole; and
6
7 WHEREAS, since AmeriCorps was founded in 1993, more than eleven
8 thousand (11,000) residents in Arkansas have served approximately eighteen
9 million (18,000,000) hours through AmeriCorps and have received higher
10 education and loan reimbursement from the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award
11 totaling more than thirty-six million dollars ($36,000,000); and
12
13 WHEREAS, AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication
14 and commitment of the more than one million (1,000,000) Americans who have
15 chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and their community
16 partners, and to encourage more Americans to follow their footsteps in
17 service,

19 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
20 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS:
21
22 THAT the Senate thank AmeriCorps members for their service and proclaim
23 the week of March 13-17, 2023, as AmeriCorps Week in Arkansas.
24
25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption, an appropriate copy of this
26 resolution shall be provided to Ms. Shana Chaplin of EngageAR by the
27 Secretary of the Senate.
