16 WHEREAS, Nucor Corporation is the largest steel and steel products
17 producer in the United States and the global leader in steelmaking
18 sustainability; and
19
20 WHEREAS, Nucor is the largest recycler of any type of material in North
21 America; and
22
23 WHEREAS, Nucor recycles approximately twenty million (20) tons of
24 ferrous scrap metal annually to produce new steel that is one hundred percent
25 (100%) recyclable; and
26
27 WHEREAS, by recycling scrap to make new steel, Nucor’s greenhouse gas
28 intensity is less than one-fourth (1/4) of the global steelmaking average and
29 one-fifth (1/5) of the intensity of a traditional blast furnace producer; and
30
31 WHEREAS, Nucor has been an important part of Arkansas’s economy since
32 1988 with the construction of its first steel mill in the state; and
33
34 WHEREAS, Nucor has steadily grown and invested in Arkansas, currently
35 operating five (5) facilities in the State, including Nucor Yamato Steel
36 Company, Nucor Steel Arkansas, Nucor Coatings Arkansas, and Skyline Steel in

1 Mississippi County and Centria in Grant County; and

3 WHEREAS, Nucor employs more than thirty-one thousand (31,000) teammates
4 working safely at over three hundred (300) operating facilities in North
5 America, with approximately two thousand four hundred (2,400) teammates
6 throughout Arkansas; and
7
8 WHEREAS, in thirty-five (35) years of operations in Arkansas, Nucor has
9 had a practice of never laying off a single teammate at its steel mills and
10 Nucor teammates all share in the success of the company; and
11
12 WHEREAS, the median pay for Nucor’s production teammates over the last
13 three (3) years has averaged more than one hundred thousand dollars
14 ($100,000) per year; and
15
16 WHEREAS, to reinforce its culture, the majority of Nucor’s teammates
17 below the officer level are treated as if they are owners of the company,
18 historically receiving ten percent (10%) of Nucor’s earnings in a profit-
19 sharing plan in addition to their salary; and
20
21 WHEREAS, the profit-sharing amount returned to Nucor teammates was a
22 company-record eight hundred sixty-two million dollars ($862,000,000) in
23 2022, and the total is expected to approach to one billion dollars
24 ($1,000,000,000) in 2023; and
25
26 WHEREAS, 2022 was the safest year for Nucor teammates in the company’s
27 history, achieving a record-low injury and illness rate for the fourth
28 consecutive year; and
29
30 WHEREAS, Nucor has invested more than one billion dollars
31 ($1,000,000,000) in its Arkansas steel mills in the last five (5) years to
32 modernize and upgrade the capabilities of the facilities; and
33
34 WHEREAS, the western hemisphere’s largest beams are produced at Nucor
35 Yamato Steel and Arkansas-made steel can be found in iconic American
36 structures such as the Freedom Tower NYC (One World Trade Center), the home

1 of the Dallas Cowboys, ATT Stadium, and the world-renowned Donald W. Reynolds
2 Razorback Stadium; and

4 WHEREAS, Nucor is committed to education in Arkansas, offering every
5 Nucor teammate and their dependents a four thousand dollar ($4,000) per-year
6 scholarship to college or vocational school, which nationwide has amounted to
7 more than one hundred fifteen million dollars ($115,000,000) awarded to
8 nearly twenty-five thousand (25,000) children since the program’s inception
9 in 1974 with nearly twelve million dollars ($12,000,0000) awarded in
10 Arkansas,

12 NOW THEREFORE,
13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
14 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

16 THAT the Senate recognize and celebrate Nucor Day at the State Capitol
17 Building on March 7, 2023.

19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon its adoption, a copy of this
20 resolution shall be transmitted to the CEO of Nucor Corporation by the
21 Secretary of the Senate.
