19 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded on January 15, 1908,
20 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., is America’s first
21 Greek-letter organization for Black women; and
22
23 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman
24 Lyle and eight (8) other visionaries who resolved that their college
25 experience should be meaningful and productive; and
26
27 WHEREAS, that small group grew to a membership of more than three
28 hundred thousand (300,000) college-educated women from around the world, with
29 an active membership of over seventy-five thousand (75,000) women who
30 represent a diverse group; and
31
32 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s membership includes educators,
33 heads of state, politicians, lawyers, medical professionals, media
34 personalities, decision makers in major corporations, and the current Vice
35 President of the United States Kamala Harris; and

1 WHEREAS, well-known honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
2 include Marian Anderson, Maya Angelou, Ella Fitzgerald, Mae Jemison, Coretta
3 Scott King, and Judge Constance Baker Motley; and
4
5 WHEREAS, local and state-wide members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
6 include Judge Andree Layton Roaf, former Senator Irma Hunter Brown, former
7 Representative Nancy Blount, former Representative Wilhelmina Lewellen,
8 Representative Jamie Scott, Representative Joy Springer, Senator Linda
9 Chesterfield, and Deputy Director for the Senate/Assistant Secretary of the
10 Senate Sabrina Lewellen; and
11
12 WHEREAS, there are twenty-one (21) chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha
13 Sorority throughout the state and each chapter is proud of its community
14 efforts in the areas of education, the arts, economic development, and health
15 care; and
16
17 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority responds to the contemporary needs
18 of the Black community with comprehensive nontraditional programs; and
19
20 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's mission of "Service to All
21 Mankind" began at its inception, and as a result the sorority has remained at
22 the forefront of positive change in American life; and
23
24 WHEREAS, during each biennial legislative session of the General
25 Assembly, a day is designated as "AKA Day at the Capitol", drawing together
26 Arkansas’s constitutional officers, elected officials, and sorority members
27 from across the state to encourage participation in the legislative process,
28
29 NOW THEREFORE,
30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
31 STATE OF ARKANSAS:

33 THAT the Senate commend Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., for its
34 service work and contributions to its communities, and celebrate February 27,
35 2023, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the Arkansas State Capitol.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT upon adoption, a copy of this resolution shall be
2 provided by the Secretary of the Senate to Joya T. Hayes, the South Central
3 Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
