He went on to earn a basketball scholarship at Hiwassee Junior College and later at Birmingham-Southern College, where he became the first African American inducted into the college's Hall of Fame. His career in education and coaching began while he was in graduate school, and he made a lasting impact on both at-risk and affluent youth in Birmingham, fostering a sense of community and self-belief among them.

Despite facing personal challenges, including a near-fatal car accident in 1999 that left him partially paralyzed, Coach Patton has remained active in supporting youth activities and serving on various boards and committees. His dedication to teaching self-respect, discipline, and life skills has left a profound legacy in the community. The resolution expresses sincere appreciation for Patton's hard work and the exemplary role he has played in enriching the lives of student-athletes across Alabama, culminating in the naming of "The Patton Gym" at The Altamont School in his honor.
