The resolution honors Ralph D. Patton for his significant contributions to the development and well-being of young athletes in Birmingham, recognizing his roles as a teacher, coach, administrator, and community program assistant. Patton's athletic journey began at Brainerd High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he excelled in multiple sports. He went on to earn a basketball scholarship at Hiwassee Junior College and later at Birmingham-Southern College, where he became the first African American inducted into the college's Hall of Fame. His career in education and coaching began while he was in graduate school, and he made a lasting impact on both at-risk youth and affluent students, fostering a sense of community and hope among diverse groups.

Despite facing personal challenges, including a near-fatal car accident in 1999 that left him partially paralyzed, Coach Patton has remained active in supporting youth activities and serving on various boards. His dedication to teaching self-respect, discipline, and life skills has left a profound legacy in Birmingham. The resolution expresses sincere appreciation for his hard work and the exemplary role he has played in enriching the lives of student-athletes across Alabama, culminating in the naming of "The Patton Gym" at The Altamont School in his honor.
