Under existing law, first responders who participate in the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) and are permanently and totally unable to perform the duties of a firefighter or law enforcement officer due to injuries sustained in the line of duty may be eligible for full retirement benefits based upon their Tier and number of years of creditable service in the system. This bill would provide full retirement benefits for first responders who participate in the system and are permanently and totally unable to perform the duties of a firefighter or law enforcement officer due to injuries sustained in the line of duty, regardless or their Tier and number of years of creditable service in the system. This bill would also provide for retroactive application to January 1, 2023.
