The resolution honors the life and legacy of Joe Wheeler Patterson, a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of the Huntsville–Madison County Community in Alabama. Sheriff Patterson served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and began his law enforcement career in 1958 with the Huntsville Police Department, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was elected Sheriff of Madison County in 1978, serving four consecutive terms with integrity and compassion. His commitment to law enforcement was further exemplified by his graduation from the FBI National Academy and his leadership roles, including serving as President of the Alabama Sheriffs Association and being inducted into the Alabama Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

Beyond his law enforcement contributions, Sheriff Patterson was a passionate advocate for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, helping to establish a home in Madison County for underprivileged children.
