The resolution honors the life and legacy of Joe Wheeler Patterson, a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of the Huntsville–Madison County Community, who devoted 96 years to serving his country, state, and local citizens. After enlisting in the United States Army and serving in the Korean War, Patterson began his law enforcement career with the Huntsville Police Department in 1958, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving as the administrative assistant to the Mayor. He was elected Sheriff of Madison County in 1978, serving four consecutive terms and earning recognition as President of the Alabama Sheriffs Association and an inductee into the Alabama Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

Beyond his law enforcement achievements, Sheriff Patterson was a passionate advocate for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, helping to establish a home in Madison County for underprivileged children. His commitment to community service extended to his role as a board member of the Huntsville–Madison County Airport Authority.
