The resolution honors the life and legacy of Joe Wheeler Patterson, a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of the Huntsville–Madison County Community in Alabama. Over his 96 years, Patterson served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and began a distinguished law enforcement career with the Huntsville Police Department in 1958. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and later served as the administrative assistant to the Mayor. Elected as Sheriff of Madison County in 1978, Patterson served four consecutive terms, earning recognition as President of the Alabama Sheriffs Association and being inducted into the Alabama Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

Beyond his law enforcement achievements, Patterson was a passionate advocate for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, helping to establish a home in Madison County for underprivileged children. He also contributed to the community as a board member of the Huntsville–Madison County Airport Authority.
