The resolution honors the life and legacy of Joe Wheeler Patterson, a dedicated public servant and lifelong resident of the Huntsville–Madison County Community, who devoted 96 years to serving his country, state, and local citizens. After enlisting in the United States Army and serving in the Korean War, Patterson began his law enforcement career with the Huntsville Police Department in 1958, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving as administrative assistant to the Mayor. He was a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy and was elected Sheriff of Madison County in 1978, serving four consecutive terms with integrity and compassion.

Beyond his role as Sheriff, Patterson was actively involved in the Alabama Sheriffs Association and was inducted into the Alabama Law Enforcement Hall of Fame. He was a strong advocate for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, helping to establish a home in Madison County for underprivileged children. His contributions extended to serving on the Huntsville–Madison County Airport Authority, reflecting his commitment to the community. The resolution serves as a permanent record of respect, gratitude, and admiration for Sheriff Patterson's exceptional life and the profound impact he had on countless lives.
