The resolution establishes the Joint Interim Study Commission on PTSD in First Responders in Alabama, aimed at addressing the mental health challenges faced by first responders who experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to traumatic events encountered in the line of duty. The commission will explore how state, county, and municipal governments can better utilize available funding to provide effective services for these individuals. The commission will consist of various appointed members, including representatives from the Association of County Commissions of Alabama, the Alabama League of Municipalities, the Alabama Department of Mental Health, and legislative leaders from both houses.
The commission is tasked with meeting to conduct its business, electing a chair and vice chair during its first meeting, which must occur within 60 days of the resolution's passage. It will gather information and recommendations from relevant associations and prepare a report detailing its findings and suggestions by the third legislative day of the 2026 Regular Legislative Session. Upon submission of the report, the commission will be dissolved. Members of the commission will receive compensation and reimbursement for their participation, while non-legislative members will serve without pay but may be reimbursed for necessary expenses.
