This bill amends Section 45-37-230 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to establish new compensation provisions for the Sheriff of Jefferson County. Starting January 14, 2019, the sheriff's annual salary will be set at $160,000, and the sheriff will also receive cost-of-living increases equivalent to those granted to deputy sheriffs in Jefferson County. Additionally, effective June 1, 2025, the sheriff will receive an additional expense allowance of $40,000 per year, payable in monthly installments from the county's general fund. This allowance is intended to supplement the sheriff's overall compensation and may be considered for retirement contributions.

Furthermore, the bill stipulates that beginning January 18, 2027, the sheriff's annual salary will increase to $248,000, at which point the previous salary and expense allowance provisions will become void. The act is set to take effect on June 1, 2025. The amendments include the deletion of the phrase "Effective beginning the next term of office" and the insertion of specific dates and compensation amounts to clarify the new salary structure and allowances for the sheriff.
