This bill amends Section 45-37-230 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to establish new compensation provisions for the Sheriff of Jefferson County. The annual salary for the sheriff is set at $160,000 starting January 14, 2019, and the sheriff will also receive cost-of-living increases equivalent to those granted to deputy sheriffs in Jefferson County after that date. Additionally, beginning June 1, 2025, the sheriff will receive an additional expense allowance of $40,000 per year, payable in monthly installments from the county's general fund. This allowance is in addition to other compensation and may be considered for retirement contributions.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that effective January 18, 2027, the sheriff's annual salary will increase to $248,000, at which point the previously established salary and expense allowance provisions will become void. The bill removes the previous language that indicated these changes would take effect at the next term of office, instead specifying the exact dates for implementation. The act is set to become effective on June 1, 2025.
