The current law, which set the sheriff's salary at $70,000, is replaced with a new base salary of $170,000 for any newly-elected sheriff, effective from the first full pay period after the start of their term. Additionally, the bill introduces a 7.5 percent salary increase for sheriffs who are re-elected to successive terms, with similar provisions for those elected to non-successive terms. The bill also specifies that the sheriff will receive benefits provided to Madison County Commission employees but will not be eligible for cost-of-living increases.

Furthermore, the bill includes specific provisions for the individual serving as sheriff on June 1, 2025, who will see an increase in salary to $170,000 and a subsequent 7.5 percent increase if re-elected to a second successive term. The bill clarifies that the sheriff will not receive any other increases in compensation beyond what is specified in this section. The previous language that restricted the sheriff from receiving any monetary compensation other than reimbursements for expenses has been deleted. The act is set to take effect on June 1, 2025.
