The bill authorizes the Legislative Council to contract for the demolition of the current Alabama State House building located at 11 South Union Street in Montgomery, contingent upon the completion of the new Alabama State House. It allows for the removal and disposition of property and materials affixed to the building, regardless of whether they are listed as state inventory. The Legislative Council, along with other legislative bodies, is tasked with providing a list of these items to the State Auditor, who will then remove them from the inventory. The bill also stipulates that the property and materials can be reused, recycled, sold, or disposed of in a fiscally responsible manner, and that items of minimal value may be used to commemorate the building's historic significance.
Additionally, the bill empowers the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Secretary of the Senate to set prices for desks, chairs, and other items from the old chambers that will not be moved to the new State House. These items can be sold to members and employees of the Legislature as determined by the Clerk and Secretary. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
