This resolution addresses the tragic bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham by the Ku Klux Klan on September 15, 1963, which resulted in the deaths of four young girls and left Sarah Collins Rudolph, the "fifth girl," severely injured. At just 12 years old, Sarah suffered life-altering injuries, including the loss of sight in one eye and the emotional trauma of losing her sister, Addie Mae. Despite her hopes of becoming a nurse, her disability hindered her dreams. In 2019, Attorney Ishan Bhabha reached out to Governor Ivey seeking an apology and justice for Sarah, which the Governor provided, promising discussions would commence regarding her situation.
However, six years have passed since that assurance, and Sarah Collins Rudolph has yet to receive the recognition and support she deserves from the state. The resolution calls on the Alabama Legislature to formally acknowledge her enduring physical and mental injuries and urges Governor Ivey to fulfill her commitment to engage in discussions with the relevant parties to address Sarah's needs and seek justice for the impact of the bombing on her life.
