The bill amends Section 22-18-4 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to enhance the qualifications for emergency medical services personnel (EMSP) licensure by allowing the Alabama Department of Public Health to credit education and training acquired during military service towards licensure requirements. Specifically, the new language mandates that the department accept proof of education, training, and experience from military service members, including successful completion of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians examination, as valid qualifications for obtaining an EMSP license. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for the department to adopt rules to implement this new requirement.
In conjunction with these insertions, the bill also removes duplicative language and makes technical revisions to modernize the existing code. Notable deletions include references to the "Board of Health" which are replaced with "department," and the removal of certain phrases that are no longer necessary. The bill clarifies that no fees will be charged for permits issued to volunteer rescue squads providing ambulance services on a gratuitous basis unless licensure is requested. The act is set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
