This bill amends Section 45-17-230 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to establish a new compensation structure for the Sheriff of Colbert County. The sheriff will initially receive a total compensation of $50,000 per year, payable from the county general fund in equal installments. This amount will replace any previous salary, expense allowances, or fees. Starting October 1, 2025, the sheriff's total compensation will increase to $96,000 per year, which will include an expense allowance. Additionally, beginning January 18, 2027, the sheriff's base salary will be set at $96,000 per year, voiding the previous compensation structure.
The bill also introduces provisions for uniform increases in compensation for the sheriff, aligning with increases provided to other county employees. Any such increases will initially be paid as an expense allowance during the current term and will convert to salary at the start of the next term. Furthermore, any expense allowance granted under this section will be treated as salary for retirement purposes. The act is set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
