The bill amends Section 45-17-230 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to establish a new compensation structure for the Sheriff of Colbert County. The sheriff will initially receive a total compensation of $50,000 per year, payable from the county general fund in equal installments. This amount will replace any previous salary, expense allowance, or fees. Starting October 1, 2025, the sheriff's total compensation will increase to $96,000 per year, which will include an expense allowance. By January 18, 2027, the sheriff's base salary will also be set at $96,000 per year, voiding the previous compensation structure.
Additionally, the bill introduces provisions for uniform increases in compensation for the sheriff, aligning with increases provided to other county employees. Any increases granted during a term will be treated as an expense allowance until the next term, at which point they will convert to salary. The bill also stipulates that any expense allowance provided will be considered salary for retirement purposes. The act is set to take effect on October 1, 2025.
