The bill amends Section 20-1-71 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to define "corn masa" and "corn masa product," while also making technical revisions to update the language. The new definitions specify that corn masa is a dry flour-type product made from corn treated with slaked lime or through a process known as nixtamalization, and corn masa products are any food items containing corn masa. Additionally, the bill introduces Section 20-1-79, which mandates that corn masa and corn masa products sold for human consumption must be enriched with specific amounts of folic acid—0.7 milligrams for corn masa and 0.4 milligrams for corn masa products.
The bill also includes several deletions and insertions to clarify existing definitions and standards. For instance, the term "words and phrases" is replaced with "terms," and the definitions of various food products are updated to align with current federal regulations. The act will take effect on June 1, 2026, and it exempts corn masa and corn masa products made by cottage food production operations and those sold by grocery stores that offer conforming products from the enrichment requirement.
