Under existing law, an individual commits the crime of cruelty to a dog or cat when he or she takes certain actions. The law also defines the term "cruel" to include abandonment of a dog or cat for purposes of committing this crime. This bill would specifically prohibit the abandonment of a dog or cat and provide a criminal penalty for a violation. This bill would also make nonsubstantive, technical revisions to update the existing code language to current style.
