This resolution mandates the Director of the Legislative Services Agency to engage an external consultant with national expertise in governmental ethics to review Alabama's state ethics laws. The consultant is expected to be someone from outside the state, possessing significant experience in the field. The purpose of this study is to ensure that the ethics laws governing over 300,000 public officials and employees in Alabama, including teachers and firefighters, are clear and robust enough to maintain public confidence and integrity in government operations.
The findings and recommendations from this study are to be reported back to the Director of the Legislative Services Agency, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate by the first day of the 2025 Regular Session. This initiative reflects the state's commitment to uphold ethical standards and safeguard against corruption, thereby serving the people of Alabama effectively. The resolution was passed by the House on May 8, 2024, and subsequently adopted by the Senate on the same day.
