Lester Memorial Methodist Church is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in April 2024, marking a century since its establishment in the City of Oneonta, Blount County. The church's history dates back to 1887 with the organization of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, followed by the Oneonta Methodist Episcopal Church in 1912, which later built "The Little Brick Church" in 1913. In 1923, the original church was replaced with the current Sanctuary, named in honor of Pastor Samuel Robert Lester. A significant moment in the church's history occurred in 1938 when three Methodist congregations unified, with Reverend Joseph Owen becoming the first minister of the merged church. Over the years, the church expanded its facilities, including the construction of a classroom building in 1948, the Fellowship Hall and Education Building in 1966, and the acquisition of the Annex building in 1976.
The church has been active in community service, starting a kindergarten in 1977 and a daycare program shortly after. It also established the Praisingers Youth Choir and underwent a major renovation in 1987, enhancing the Sanctuary and adding needlepoint decorations. In 1986, under Reverend Gary Formby, Lester Memorial pioneered a contemporary worship service, contributing to its growth. The church continued to expand with the construction of the Upper Room and Children's building in 2001. In a significant recent development, the church voted to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church in 2022 and joined the Global Methodist Church in 2023. The Alabama House of Representatives recognizes the church's centennial and extends warm wishes for its future.
