This bill pertains to Limestone County and sets forth provisions regarding the salary and employment practices of the coroner and deputy coroners. It establishes that, beginning with the next term of office, the coroner's salary will be $40,000 per year, which will be the total compensation and in lieu of any other compensation, salary, expense allowance, or fees previously provided. The coroner is also granted the authority, with county commission approval, to employ assistants at a salary of $500 per month and to appoint one or more deputy coroners who will have the same responsibilities as the coroner in cases of absence or incapacitation.

The bill amends Section 45-42-61 of the Code of Alabama 1975, allowing the coroner to appoint deputy coroners with the approval of the county commission and increases the salary of deputy coroners from $75 to $600 per month, which will be their total compensation in lieu of any other compensation, salary, expense allowance, or fees prior to the act. Additionally, the bill repeals Section 45-42-60 of the Code of Alabama 1975 and Act 176 of the 1955 Regular Session. The act will become effective at the end of the current coroner's term. The bill was passed by the House on April 30, 2024, and by the Senate on May 9, 2024.
