Chief Apostle Cleveland Sylvester Smith of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on April 7, 2024, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of community service and religious leadership. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and a graduate of Rowan High School, Apostle Smith was known for his musical talents which he shared with Baptist churches in Mobile. He served in the U.S. Army, lived in various states, and ultimately returned to Mobile where he continued his music ministry. In 1969, he became the Minister of Music at Mt. Olive No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church and later founded The Cleveland Smith Chorale, an interdenominational gospel group.

Apostle Smith's ministry expanded through his leadership at St. John's Deliverance Temple, which he organized in 1974. The temple's outreach included ministries to the homeless, incarcerated, and those on death row, and it also established St. John's Christian Academy. Apostle Smith, who adopted three children, was revered for his service and the positive impact he had on his community. The Alabama House of Representatives has recorded his death with deep sadness and offers this resolution in tribute to his life and service, extending heartfelt sympathy to his family.
