Officer Garrett Crumby has been posthumously awarded the 2024 Alabama Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement, the state's highest law enforcement honor, for demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of duty. On March 28, 2023, Officer Crumby tragically lost his life while responding to an active shooting at the Governor's Bend Apartment Complex in Huntsville. Alongside Officer Albert Morin, he approached the source of the emergency call, Apartment #506. After identifying themselves as law enforcement and hearing screams from within, Officer Crumby opened the door and was met with gunfire, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite being shot, Officer Morin managed to return fire, injuring the assailant in the leg and calling for backup. Both officers were transported to Huntsville Hospital, where Officer Crumby succumbed to his injuries. The resolution honors Officer Crumby's heroic actions and his dedication to protecting and serving the community. The Alabama House of Representatives resolves to posthumously recognize and honor Officer Crumby with the 2024 Alabama Legislative Medal of Honor for Law Enforcement, dedicating the resolution to his memory with gratitude, admiration, and esteem.
