Deputy Deonte Washington of Tuscaloosa County is being honored with the 2024 Alabama Legislative Meritorious Service Award for Law Enforcement for his exceptional bravery and quick action in the line of duty. On December 15, 2023, Deputy Washington responded to a structure fire on Old Greensboro Road. He assisted the Tuscaloosa Fire Department by notifying residents and clearing the building. During the evacuation, he discovered a disoriented male inside an apartment, helped him to safety, and alerted the fire department to treat him. Despite the danger, he re-entered the smoke-filled building to rescue a disoriented female, carrying her to safety.

The resolution acknowledges Deputy Washington's courage and selflessness, as he prioritized the safety of Tuscaloosa County's citizens over his own. His actions directly resulted in saving two lives. The Alabama House of Representatives extends its highest commendation to Deputy Washington, honoring him with the prestigious award and dedicating the resolution to him as a token of gratitude, admiration, and esteem for his service.
