Officer Jon Gossett is being honored with the 2024 Alabama Legislative Meritorious Service Award for Law Enforcement for his exceptional bravery during a domestic disturbance call on April 15, 2023. On that day, Officer Gossett responded to a situation where an individual had shot and killed his wife and was holding his four children hostage. Officer Gossett engaged the offender in conversation at a window, risking his own safety by putting down his rifle and establishing a rapport that led to the release of the children, who were in imminent danger as the offender had intended to kill them.
Following the successful negotiation and release of the hostages, Officer Gossett, along with Officer Miller and Sergeant Phillips, were able to take the offender into custody using tear gas, without any further harm. The Alabama House of Representatives recognizes Officer Gossett's critical role in preventing a more tragic outcome and his dedication to his duty to protect and serve. The resolution is dedicated to Officer Gossett in gratitude, admiration, and esteem, as he is awarded the prestigious legislative honor for his service.
