Sheriff Heath Jackson of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office is being honored with the 2024 Alabama Legislative Meritorious Service Award for Law Enforcement. This commendation is in recognition of his exemplary courage and quick thinking while off duty. On Mother's Day, May 14, 2023, Sheriff Jackson responded to a call for help after two families were involved in a kayaking accident on Burnt Corn Creek in Brewton. Two adults and two children were clinging to a tree limb in the water to avoid drowning, while others were carried downstream.

Despite the high water and strong currents due to recent rains, Sheriff Jackson used his jet ski to reach the overturned kayaks and rescued each person one by one. His actions played a crucial role in saving the lives of the eight individuals involved in the accident. The Alabama House of Representatives has resolved to honor Sheriff Jackson with this award, expressing their utmost gratitude, admiration, and esteem for his life-saving efforts.
