The bill amends Section 45-8A-70 of the Code of Alabama 1975, specifically regarding the election dates for members of the Board of Education of the City of Jacksonville in Calhoun County. The new legal language specifies that members will serve extended terms until the day before the first Monday in October after their successors are elected. It also establishes that elections for Places 3, 4, and 5 will coincide with the City of Jacksonville municipal elections, while elections for Places 1 and 2 will occur two years after those elections. The previous language that specified election years (2000, 2002, and 2004) has been deleted.
Additionally, the bill clarifies that future board members will take office on the first Monday in October following their election and serve four-year terms. The requirement for elections to be held in even years to fill vacancies has been removed. This act is set to become effective on June 1, 2024.
