The bill amends Act 2023-62, now codified as Section 45-38-81.60 of the Code of Alabama 1975, which previously authorized the Judge of Probate of Lamar County to set and collect a mail fee for the renewal of motor vehicle license registrations and business licenses by mail or through the Internet. The amendment expands this authorization to include boat licenses and any other licenses that can be delivered by mail. The Judge of Probate may charge a mail fee of up to five dollars ($5) per transaction to cover the costs of renewal and mailing of the licenses. The collected fees are to be deposited into a special county fund and used at the discretion of the Judge of Probate for office operations.
The bill also clarifies that this section supplements any other authority or fees of the Judge of Probate and does not affect the option for individuals to renew their motor vehicle, business, boat, or any other licenses in person at the office of the Judge of Probate. The act is set to become effective on June 1, 2024. The bill has been enrolled and passed by the House on April 16, 2024, and by the Senate on May 2, 2024.
