The bill amends Section 45-35-70 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to adjust the compensation structure for the Sheriff of Houston County and the Chair of the Houston County Commission. Specifically, it establishes that beginning June 1, 2024, the annual salary of the Sheriff will increase to $130,800, up from the previous amount of $120,000. The bill also introduces a provision for uniform increases in compensation for the Sheriff, which will include cost-of-living adjustments similar to those granted to other county employees. These increases will initially be paid as an expense allowance during the Sheriff’s term and will be converted to salary at the start of the next term.

Additionally, the bill modifies the compensation for the Chair of the Houston County Commission, ensuring that their monthly compensation is set at 85% of the monthly salary of the Houston County Judge of Probate as of April 1, 2007. The bill also confirms the compensation for district commissioners and establishes a monthly expense allowance of $250 for them, as well as a $500 monthly expense allowance for the Chair for performing county duties. The act is set to take effect on June 1, 2024.
