The bill amends existing legislation regarding the compensation and election of the license commissioner in Calhoun County, Alabama. It modifies Section 1 of Acts 1978, No. 117, and replaces Section 45-8-200.01 of the Code of Alabama 1975. The bill removes language pertaining to the continuation of the current license commissioner's term until a successor is elected and assumes office in January 1981. Instead, it establishes that beginning with the 1980 election, the license commissioner's term will be six years, with elections held every six years thereafter. The bill also includes new provisions for election notices, candidate qualifications, and certification of election results by the judge of probate.

Additionally, the bill sets forth changes in the compensation for the license commissioner. Starting with the new term in January 1981, the commissioner will receive an annual salary of $22,500, paid from the county treasury. From July 1, 2024, the commissioner will receive an additional expense allowance equal to 12.5 percent of their salary as of June 1, 2024, payable in monthly installments from the county's general fund. This allowance is in addition to other compensation and benefits. However, beginning with the next term after July 1, 2024, the commissioner's annual salary will be set at 112.5 percent of the salary as of June 1, 2024, and the expense allowance mentioned earlier will be void. The act is set to become effective on June 1, 2024.
