The bill amends Section 16-1-26 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to increase the maximum compensation for members of local boards of education from six hundred dollars ($600) per month to nine hundred dollars ($900) per month, unless a higher amount is set by a local act and approved by a majority vote at the board's annual meeting. The compensation is in addition to actual traveling and other necessary expenses incurred by board members. The bill also introduces a new provision that places the compensation of any local board of education member who fails to meet continuing education and training requirements into escrow until they become compliant. If a member leaves their position with compensation still in escrow, those funds will revert back to the local board of education.
Additionally, the bill repeals Section 16-8-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975, which relates to the compensation of members of county boards of education. The act is set to become effective on October 1, 2024. The bill has passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with the certification of passage provided by the Senate Secretary and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
