The bill amends Section 16-1-26 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to increase the maximum compensation for members of local boards of education from $600 to $900 per month, unless a higher amount is set by a local act approved by a majority vote at the board's annual meeting. Additionally, it replaces the term "city and county school boards" with "local boards of education" and allows members to refuse all or part of their approved compensation. The bill also introduces a new provision that requires the compensation of any member who does not comply with continuing education and training requirements to be held in escrow until compliance is achieved. If a member leaves their position with funds remaining in escrow, those funds will revert back to the local board of education.
Furthermore, the bill repeals Section 16-8-5, which pertains to the compensation of members of county boards of education. The changes outlined in this act are set to take effect on October 1, 2024.
