Throughout his life, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his family, community, and profession, serving in various capacities including as Director of the Alabama Historical Society and holding leadership roles in multiple historical and genealogical organizations. A distinguished student-athlete and leader during his time at Evergreen High School, he went on to earn a football scholarship to Auburn University and later graduated from The University of Alabama School of Law, where he also served as President of the student bar association.

Mr. Melton's professional career included significant contributions to Alabama's legislative and judicial systems, having served in the Alabama House of Representatives and the Alabama Senate, as well as in various legal capacities for nearly 50 years. He was actively involved in the Alabama Bar Association and contributed to the judicial system as a Bar Commissioner and Judge on the Alabama Court of the Judiciary. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a devoted member of the Evergreen Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and contributed to church history.
