The proposed amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 2022 seeks to redefine the jurisdiction of the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education. Effective for the school year beginning in August 2025, the amendment stipulates that the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education will only have authority over territories within the corporate limits of the City of Tuscaloosa. Any territory outside these limits, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the Tuscaloosa City Board, will instead fall under the control of the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education or any applicable city board of education.

Additionally, the amendment addresses the distribution of ad valorem tax revenues. For the tax year starting October 1, 2024, one-fourth of the revenue collected from ad valorem taxes in areas outside the corporate limits of Tuscaloosa will be allocated to the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. Furthermore, any existing ad valorem taxes levied on properties outside the city limits will continue to be collected and used solely for educational purposes, while allowing for transitional attendance agreements between the two boards. The amendment will be put to a vote, and if approved by a majority of qualified electors, will become part of the state constitution.
