The bill seeks to amend Section 16-40A-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975, concerning education. It aims to restrict classroom instruction and discussion on topics of sexual orientation or gender identity in public K-12 schools, specifically from kindergarten through eighth grade. The instruction or discussion on these topics must be age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate in accordance with state standards.
Additionally, the bill introduces new prohibitions on the display of flags or insignia related to sexual orientation or gender identity. Teachers and other public K-12 employees are not allowed to display such flags or insignia in classrooms or on the property of public K-12 schools. The State Board of Education is tasked with adopting rules for the implementation and enforcement of this section. The act is set to become effective on October 1, 2024.
