The bill amends Section 16-40A-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to prohibit public K-12 schools from providing classroom instruction or discussions related to gender identity or sexual orientation for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, unless such content is deemed age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate according to state standards. Additionally, the bill introduces new language that explicitly states that no teacher or public K-12 employee may display flags or insignia related to sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms or on school property.

The bill also mandates that the State Board of Education adopt rules for the implementation and enforcement of these provisions. The act is set to take effect on October 1, 2024.
