The bill amends Section 16-40A-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to prohibit certain classroom instruction related to gender identity or sexual orientation for students in kindergarten through eighth grade in public K-12 schools. Specifically, it states that individuals providing instruction in these grades shall not engage in discussions or provide instruction on these topics in a manner deemed inappropriate for the students' age or development.
Additionally, the bill introduces new provisions that prohibit teachers and other public K-12 employees from displaying flags or insignia related to sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms or on school property. The State Board of Education is tasked with adopting rules for the implementation and enforcement of these regulations. The act is set to take effect on October 1, 2024.
