House Joint Resolution 225, enacted as Act 2023-521, established the Joint Interim Study Commission on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren to address the unique challenges faced by grandparents who take on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren. The original act mandated that the commission submit its findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the Legislature by the third legislative day of the 2024 Regular Session, after which the commission would be dissolved.
However, recognizing the need for additional time to thoroughly develop its recommendations, the Legislature of Alabama has resolved to extend the commission's duration. The commission is now required to prepare and submit its report by the third legislative day of the 2025 Regular Session. Following the submission of this report, the commission will be dissolved and relieved of any further responsibilities. Additionally, the commission must adhere to transparency requirements by notifying the Secretary of State about its meetings, membership, and any produced documents throughout its extended term.
