House Joint Resolution 225, which became Act 2023-521, established the Joint Interim Study Commission on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren to explore the issues faced by grandparents who take on the role of primary caregivers for their grandchildren. The original act required the commission to report its findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the Legislature by the third legislative day of the 2024 Regular Session, after which the commission would be dissolved.

However, the commission has determined that it requires an additional year to thoroughly develop its recommendations on the matter. Consequently, the Legislature of Alabama has passed a resolution to extend the life of the commission. The new deadline for the commission to submit its report is now the third legislative day of the 2025 Regular Session. Following the submission of this report, the commission will be dissolved. Additionally, the commission is instructed to provide notice of all meetings, list the names of its members, and submit a copy of the final report and any other documents produced to the Secretary of State, as per Section 36-14-17.1 of the Code of Alabama 1975.
