The bill amends Section 32-6-55 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to extend the eligibility for the USS Alabama Battleship Commission distinctive license tag to include both former and current chairs of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission. The distinctive license tag bears the insignia "BB-60," which were the call letters of the battleship USS Alabama during World War II. The bill allows these individuals to use the distinctive tag on both their official and private automobiles. It also specifies that upon payment of the regular license fee, the former or current chair is entitled to request a special tag bearing the battleship call letters along with a unique individual identifier.
Additionally, the bill requires the USS Alabama Battleship Commission to annually certify to the Department of Revenue a list of each former and current chair eligible for the distinctive license tag. This certification must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of each registration year. The act is set to become effective on January 1, 2024, following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law. The bill has been enrolled and has passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives as of May 31, 2023.
