The Students' Right to Know Act of 2023 mandates the Alabama Commission on Higher Education to gather and disseminate essential data to assist students in making informed educational and career choices. The commission is required to compile annual statistics on various aspects, including the 50 most in-demand jobs in Alabama, average college costs, student loan payments, graduation rates, and salaries post-graduation. Additionally, the commission will create an interactive online tool called the Student Horizon Database, which will allow users to compare educational programs, costs, and outcomes based on their selections.
Furthermore, the act stipulates that the commission will publish a Student Graduate Horizon Scorecard by October 31, 2024, and annually thereafter, detailing high-paying degrees and in-demand jobs. The commission is also tasked with issuing an annual report to the Legislature on the effectiveness of postsecondary institutions in aligning their programs with the job market. To facilitate compliance, the commission may utilize existing databases or require colleges and universities to provide necessary data. The act will take effect on January 1, 2024, following approval by the Governor.
