The bill amends Sections 32-6-250 and 32-6-251 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to include the Air Medal among the military awards eligible for commemoration on a distinctive permanent license plate. Specifically, it adds the phrase "
to any resident who is arecipient of the Air Medal," to the list of awards recognized for this purpose. Additionally, it modifies the language regarding fees and eligibility for license plates, ensuring that recipients of the Air Medal, along with those of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, and Bronze Star, will pay the regular registration fee, ad valorem taxes, and an annual additional fee of $25.
The bill also makes several nonsubstantive, technical revisions to update existing language, such as changing "
a person" to "
individual" in multiple instances. Furthermore, it clarifies that the distinctive plates will be marked with the letters "AM" for the Air Medal, in addition to the existing designations for other military honors. The act is set to take effect on January 1, 2024, following its passage and approval by the Governor.
